THEME
For this project, a simple electronic product was broken down to be redesigned to improve on its exiting ergonomics and to be marketed for a specific demographic. In this redesign, a CARdiNAL Alarm Clock was chosen to be marketed users who want a luxurious and elegant clock that is portable.
PRODUCT ANALYSIS
The original product is an ABS portable alarm clock that has a lid that flips open and acts as a stand. This is a very unique quality that s not found in the market and is a good component to keep for the redesign.
PRODUCT TEARDOWN
Through the teardown, the components of the product were evaluated and laid out. These components were kept for the redesign. The product has a 7-segmented LCD screen and various buttons. Overall, the user interface is kept the same, though they would be altered due to the button's small size and less clean aesthetic.
CONCEPT SKETCHING
Various concepts were ideated which can be divided into rectilinear and curvilinear forms. Various aesthetics such as clocks that can be pushed from the top to being flipped open similar to the original concept were sketched. Through user feedback, it was said that the curvilinear form was clean, less bulky, and followed the uniqueness of the original alarm clock's design.
FINAL CONCEPT
Overall, the design incorporates the flip feature while embodying a clam-shell form.
